Coming to the University of Tennessee as a Knoxville native and daughter of an alumna, I knew I wanted to make my college experience my own. When I heard about the Greg and Lisa Smith Global Leadership Scholars program, I immediately knew it was going to be the program that was the core of my college journey. I can confidently say I was right in my initial judgment.

Smith Global Leadership Scholars

The Greg and Lisa Smith Global Leadership Scholars program is the premier honors program within the Haslam College of Business. Each year, approximately 25-27 students are accepted into the program. Given the program’s competitive nature, I was intentional from my freshman year about my goal of becoming a part of it. I was honored to be accepted into the GLS Class of 2026 Cohort alongside 24 other business peers. Through the program, we engaged in an honors business education with specialized faculty, attended leadership and community building events, and studied abroad as a group in London, England during our sophomore spring semester.

Studying in London

In the spring of 2024, we all traveled to London, England to study for 4 months. During our time abroad, we completed coursework in human-centered leadership and international business management, while each of us held an international internship. I had the privilege of being placed at GDR Creative Intelligence, a trend marketing consultancy. Through this time, I grew as a business student, broadened my global competency, and created unforgettable moments with my cohort.

My Cohort

Being placed into a group of other high achieving students while at the University of Tennessee has been such a blessing. Due to our drive to succeed we can be quite competitive, but these individuals have pushed me to grow. They are my biggest cheerleaders and my support when the unexpected happens, both academically and personally. GLS has gifted me a group of people I can rely on even after undergrad as we pursue our business careers.

Impact on my College Experience

GLS has truly shaped my University of Tennessee experience. Reflecting on my previous semesters, I am grateful for my peers and faculty that supported me through my college journey. I would not have been able to achieve the leadership experience and business knowledge that I currently have without them. I will forever cherish the privilege it has been to be a part of Smith Global Leadership Scholars.
